Condolences and Support for Our Sister

We share this message with extremely heavy hearts.

Evelyn Fox, a Local 586 member and steward, lost her son on Sunday evening. He also leaves behind his wife and four young children.

We want to express our deepest condolences to Evelyn and her family for this tremendous loss.

We know that many of you will want to know what you can do to support their family as they face this tragedy. A GoFundMe donation page for the family has been set-up at this link: https://www.gofundme.com/2wae2cnb?ssid=736151317&pos=1

Thank you for sharing your care and solidarity with our Sister at this sad time.

FAQS

Q: What does a Unit Steward do?
A: A Unit Steward’s responsibilities include:
-       Oversee, support and mentor other stewards to do their jobs well
-       Provide information, references and training to stewards, the LEC and members on representation issues
-       Identify, with stewards, common workplace issues to address with the employer or for bargaining
-       Keep records of grievances for use of the membership in dealing with the employer
-       Represent members through the higher levels of the grievance process

Q: I want to run for election. How do I do that?
A: Fill out the attached form and give it to OPSEU Staff Representative Ceceil Beckford at 12:00pm on the day of your unit election.

Q: Do I already have to be a steward to run for unit steward?
A: No. If you are not already a steward, please have your nominator check BOTH “Steward” and “Unit Steward” on your nomination form.

Q: Do I have to be a permanent employee to run for unit steward or steward?
A: No. Any member in good standing (dues paying and has signed a membership card) can run. If you’re not sure if you have signed a card, we can check on the day of the election and you can sign one on the spot if necessary.

Q: What if I’d like to be a steward, but not run for Unit Steward?
A: Great! Simply fill out the nomination form, and check only “Steward” and submit your form to Ceceil. No election necessary. We will swear you in at our next General Membership Meeting. (If you are already a steward, you do not need to re-run at this time, your term is good to February 2018.)

Q: I won't be in my office on the day of my unit election. Can I still run for a position?
A: Yes. As long as your completed nomination form is submitted to Ceceil by 12:00pm on September 15 (another person can submit it on your behalf), you are eligible to stand as a candidate, even if you're not physically there during the election.

Q: I won't be in my office on the day of my unit election. Can I still vote?
A: No. The OPSEU Constitution does not allow for proxy or absentee voting. To vote in your unit election you must be physically present during the voting period.

If you have any questions about the process or if you are interested in running and would like to ask for more information before making your decision, please do not hesitate to contact us.

Thank you,
Your Local 586 Executive
